Oil solutions

Epoxy coatings are widely used as internal linings for oil due to their excellent chemical resistance and anticorrosive performance. The PPG SIGMALINE™ 523 coating is the economical and reliable solution for oil pipelines. PPG SIGMALINE 2000 and PPG SIGMALINE 2500 coatings are phenolic epoxies for pipeline interiors and exteriors; both can protect pipelines from corrosion, and offer chemical- and temperature resistance.

PPG, with an established, reputable heritage in the transportation and storage of oil, gas, potable water and wastewater, helps customers become more efficient by offering long-lasting protection.  We also provide effective maintenance solutions for touch-up or in situ applications for onsite repairs.

Internal Coating

Gas Solutions

Although natural gas is not a very corrosive substance, the pipelines used require a sophisticated coating to protect steel interiors during manufacturing, transportation and installation procedures.  This is not just to protect the steel but also to ensure a smooth surface that enhances the flow of gas.

The PPG SIGMALINE 403HS system is a thin-film, high-solids epoxy flow coating, which is designed to reduce friction within the pipeline.  Due to its excellent anticorrosive performance and its leveling effect, the internal surface remains smoother when in service.  As the diagram above shows, the laminar layer is thinner when using the PPG SIGMALINE 403HS coating, resulting in better flow of the gas, which improves transport capacity and reduces overall transportation costs.  When a solvent-free solution is required for a project, use PPG AMERCOAT® 133 PL solvent-free based epoxy flow coat in line with API RP 5L2, which has been developed for VOC and environmental demands.

Portable Water Solution
Epoxy coatings have been used for decades for potable water applications and are still the most trusted and reliable lining for water tanks and water transportation pipes.  Liquid-applied coatings, both practically and economically, are far superior solutions over the alternatives.  

To avoid identified solvent traces in freshly applied coatings that result in possible effects on taste and health, PPG has developed a series of solvent-free linings for drinking water transportation.  The table below gives an overview of product recommendations complying with many national and international standards.  The typical water temperature resistance in this sector is 40deg C.

Normal water Solutions

The oil and gas industry uses hot water to provide pressure to oil wells to ease oil extraction.  We offer simplified product solutions to one or two coats with force curing to increase efficiency for pipe coaters.

Wastewater Solutions

Wastewater forms an aggressive corrosive environment and requires additional chemical- and abrasion resistance.  Although PVC sheeting and PVC pipes are widely used solutions for wastewater lines, epoxy coatings are the preferred technology for larger capacity wastewater lines to provide appropriate chemical- and abrasion resistance against wear and tear.


The PPG SIGMALINE 523 coating is our general solution for domestic wastewater lines.  For the toughest conditions that require additional chemical- and abrasion resistance, use the PPG SIGMALINE 2000 coating for a wide pH range.


Sludge solutions

Sludge requires additional chemical- and abrasion resistance.  The PPG NOVAGUARD 840 coating is our solvent-free, amine-cured novolac phenolic epoxy, which can withstand this aggressive environment, with temperature resistance up to 65􀀀C.  The system is approved by CTL – REF#27347-1.  For steel substrates, use PPG NOVAGUARD 260 or PPG PHENGUARD™ 930 coatings as a primer.  For concrete surfaces, use PPG AMERLOCK™ SEALER for pre-treatment.

 

External Coating

Solution for buried pipeline exterior

The industry has widely used polypropylene, polyethylene and fusion-bonded epoxies (FBE) for their strong mechanical resistance.  However, polyurethanes are increasingly the preferred solution for their excellent adhesion, superior corrosion resistance, abrasion resistance, and water- and impact resistance.  The PPG SIGMALINE™ 855 (11) coating has been developed specially for this need and is certified per EN 10290, SANS 1271, and AWWA C222-09.

A range of epoxies offers excellent adhesion and superior resistances to chemicals, moisture, heat, and soil stress for immersion environment.  The general offerings are summarized in the table below:

Innovative maintenance and repair solution

In situ cleaning and coating

For pipelines that are already installed, whether new or existing, in situ methodology can be used to eliminate corrosion, erosion and sediment problems while optimizing throughput capacity and increasing product purity.  Pipelines coated by the in situ method also have advantages for girth welds and continuous coating film.


Customers benefit from our successful, long-term track record on numerous in-situ lining projects.  Our solutions extend the service life for new or existing pipelines while enhancing pipeline flow, product purity, and corrosion- and erosion protection.


PPG SIGMALINE™ 445 high-build phenolic epoxy coating is specially designed for in situ application.  It provides excellent protection in severe chemical- and high temperature service and has excellent resistance to blisters caused by the “cold wall effect.” The product is ideal for use in sweet and sour crude, brine and processed petroleum products, and is resistant to water containing hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide.
